Lesson Transcript

In this lesson, we'll cover a phrase that will be essential for those of you who are allergic to something. Letting other people know about your allergy is vital to a fun and healthy trip. In today's phrase, we'll go over "I'm allergic to something."
To start, we'll need something that we're allergic to. In some cases, allergies to peanuts can be extremely dangerous, so let's start from there.
In Greek, "I am allergic to peanuts" is Είμαι αλλεργικός στα φιστίκια. (Íme aleryikós sta fistíkia.)
Είμαι αλλεργικός στα φιστίκια. (Íme aleryikós sta fistíkia.)
Let's break it down by syllable: I-me a-ler-yi-kos sta fi-sti-kia.
Now let's hear it once again, Είμαι αλλεργικός στα φιστίκια. (Íme aleryikós sta fistíkia.)
The first word, είμαι (íme), means "I am." Let's break down this word: i-me. Αλλεργικός (Aleryikós), which in English is "allergic," follows this: A-ler-yi-kos. To recap here, we have είμαι αλλεργικός (íme aleryikós). Literally, this means "I am allergic." Let's look at the next word στα (sta), which means "to the" for plural neuter nouns. This is followed by φιστίκια (fistíkia), which means "peanuts:" fi-sti-kia.
All together, we have Είμαι αλλεργικός στα φιστίκια. (Íme aleryikós sta fistíkia.) Literally, this means "I am allergic to the peanuts."
Now let's go over some other common allergies. Let's try shrimp. The Greek word for "shrimp" is γαρίδα (garída). Therefore, "I am allergic to shrimp" is Είμαι αλλεργικός στις γαρίδες. (Íme aleryikós stis garídes.)
Είμαι αλλεργικός στις γαρίδες. (Íme aleryikós stis garídes.)
Let's break it down by syllable: I-me a-ler-yi-kos stis ga-ri-des.
Now let's hear it once again, Είμαι αλλεργικός στις γαρίδες. (Íme aleryikós stis garídes.)
Notice that the only thing that changes here is στις γαρίδες (stis garídes) in place of στα φιστίκια (sta fistíkia), while the rest is the same. Furthermore, to make the adjective feminine, you just replace αλλεργικός (aleryikós) with αλλεργική (aleryikí)!
Let's try it with "eggs," which in Greek is αυγό (avgó). "I am allergic to eggs" is Είμαι αλλεργικός στα αυγά. (Íme aleryikós sta avgá.)
Είμαι αλλεργικός στα αυγά. (Íme aleryikós sta avgá.)
Let's try it now with "milk," which in Greek is γάλα (gála). "I am allergic to milk" is Είμαι αλλεργικός στο γάλα. (Íme aleryikós sto gála.)
Είμαι αλλεργικός στο γάλα. (Íme aleryikós sto gála.)
In case you have to go to the doctor or to the hospital during your trip to Greece, you might be asked about your conditions. If you have allergies, make sure to get the right treatment.
In Greek, "Do you have any allergies?" is Είστε αλλεργικός σε κάτι; (Íste aleryikós se káti?)
Είστε αλλεργικός σε κάτι; (Íste aleryikós se káti?)
Let's break it down by syllable: I-ste a-ler-yi-kos se ka-ti?
Now let's hear it again, Είστε αλλεργικός σε κάτι; (Íste aleryikós se káti?)
The first word, είστε (íste), means "are you:" i-ste. Then, you have αλλεργικός (aleryikós), which in English is "allergic:" a-ler-yi-kos. Σε κάτι (Se kati), which means "to something," follows next: se ka-ti, σε κάτι (se káti).
All together, we have Είστε αλλεργικός σε κάτι; (Íste aleryikós se káti?) This literally means "Are you allergic to something?, but translates as "Do you have any allergies?"
In Greek, "I am having an allergic reaction" is Έχω μια αλλεργική αντίδραση. (Ého mia aleryikí andídrasi.)
Έχω μια αλλεργική αντίδραση. (Ého mia aleryikí andídrasi.)
Let's break it down by syllable: E-ho mia a-ler-yi-ki a-ndi-dra-si.
Now let's hear it once again, Έχω μια αλλεργική αντίδραση. (Ého mia aleryikí andídrasi.)
The first word, έχω (ého), means "I have." Next, we have μια (mia), which in English is "a," an indefinite article for feminine nouns. Then, you have αλλεργική (aleryikí), which means "allergic:" a-ler-yi-ki. Finally, we have αντίδραση (andídrasi), which in English is "reaction:" a-ndi-dra-si.
All together, we have Έχω μια αλλεργική αντίδραση. (Ého mia aleryikí andídrasi.) Literally, this means "I have an allergic reaction."
Okay, to close out today's lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for shouting it out loud. You'll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so Καλή τύχη (kalí týchi), which means "good luck!" in Greek.
