Lesson Transcript

In the last lesson, we learned how to make a reservation at a restaurant.
In today's lesson, we'll cover how to ask a few essential questions upon arrival.
Let's imagine that you prefer a table with a view. After entering a restaurant, you need to ask, Υπάρχει τραπέζι με θέα; (Ipárhi trapézi me théa?) - "Is there a table with a view?"
Υπάρχει τραπέζι με θέα; (Ipárhi trapézi me théa?)
Υπάρχει (Ipárhi), is the translation of "there is."
Let's break it down by syllable, I-par-hi.
Υπάρχει (Ipárhi)
We follow this with τραπέζι (trapézi), which means "table" and then followed by με θέα (me théa), which in English means "with view."
Let's break it down and hear the question again, I-par-hi tra-pe-zi me the-a?
Υπάρχει τραπέζι με θέα; (Ipárhi trapézi me théa?)
If the restaurant is not full and you have your eye on a spot, then it's polite to ask, Μπορούμε να κάτσουμε εδώ; (Borúme na kátsume edó?) This literally means "Can we sit here?"
Μπορούμε να κάτσουμε εδώ; (Borúme na kátsume edó?)
Μπορούμε (Borúme) literally means "we can'' in English.
Let's break it down by syllable. Bo-ru-me.
Μπορούμε (Borúme)
It's followed by the preposition να (na), meaning "to" and κάτσουμε (kátsume) , which means "sit down."
Let's break down these two words, na ka-tsu-me.
να κάτσουμε (na kátsume)
Finally, we have the word εδώ (edó), "here" at the end. εδώ (edó).
Let's break down and hear the question one more time. Bo-ru-me na ka-tsu-me e-do?
Μπορούμε να κάτσουμε εδώ; (Borúme na kátsume edó?)
Now let's learn what you can say when you are not satisfied with your table and want to change it. In Greek, you can ask, Μπορούμε να αλλάξουμε τραπέζι; (Borúme na aláxume trapézi?) - "Can we switch tables?"
Μπορούμε να αλλάξουμε τραπέζι; (Borúme na aláxume trapézi?)
As you might have figured out, in this sentence, we already have a few Greek words we saw in the previous two sentences. We start this with Μπορούμε (Borúme) "we can,'' then we add the preposition "to," να (na). Here comes a new word, αλλάξουμε (aláxume), that literally means "change."
Let's break it down by syllable, a-la-xu-me.
αλλάξουμε (aláxume)
Then we hear another familiar word at the end - τραπέζι (trapézi), which means "table." It was easy, wasn't it?
Let's break down the question. Bo-ru-me na a-la-xu-me tra-pe-zi?
Μπορούμε να αλλάξουμε τραπέζι; (Borúme na aláxume trapézi?)
Okay, to close out today's lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for shouting it out loud. You'll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so Καλή τύχη (kalí týchi), which means "good luck!" in Greek.
"Is there a table with a view?" - Υπάρχει τραπέζι με θέα; (Ipárhi trapézi me théa?)
Υπάρχει τραπέζι με θέα; (Ipárhi trapézi me théa?)

"Can we sit here?" - Μπορούμε να κάτσουμε εδώ; (Borúme na kátsume edó?)

All right, that's going to do it for today!
