DIALOGUES
Στέλλα:Πέτρο!
Πέτρος:Α, γεια σου, Στέλλα.
Στέλλα:Τι κάνεις;
Πέτρος:Καλά, εσύ;
Στέλλα:Μια χαρά, αλλά είμαι πολύ θυμωμένη μαζί σου. Δεν με παίρνεις τηλέφωνο. Σου στέλνω email κάθε εβδομάδα και δεν μου απαντάς ποτέ, δεν μου στέλνεις μηνύματα στο Facebook, και δεν σε βλέπω πια στο Skype. Γιατί;
Πέτρος:Ξέρεις, Στέλλα, είμαι εδώ για διακοπές. Δεν μπαίνω στο Internet.
Στέλλα:Καλά, καλά. Λοιπόν, τι νέα; Βλέπω τους γονείς σου πότε πότε και μαθαίνω τι κάνεις.
Πέτρος:Καλά είμαι, δεν δουλεύω τώρα. Έχω διακοπές μέχρι τον Σεπτέμβριο.
Στέλλα:Βλέπεις τον Αντώνη, τη Μυρτώ;
Πέτρος:Όχι, δεν τους βλέπω πια. Βλέπω όμως τον Βασίλη.
Στέλλα:Εγώ δεν τον βλέπω... Πού πας τώρα; Πάμε για καφέ;
Πέτρος:Ευχαριστώ αλλά δεν μπορώ. Με περιμένει η Έλλη στο ξενοδοχείο.
Στέλλα:Καλά. Γεια σου Πέτρο. Χάρηκα.
Πέτρος:Γεια σου.
English Host: Let’s hear the conversation one time slowly.
Στέλλα:Πέτρο!
Πέτρος:Α, γεια σου, Στέλλα.
Στέλλα:Τι κάνεις;
Πέτρος:Καλά, εσύ;

Πέτρος:Γεια σου.
English Host: Now let’s hear it with the English translation.
Στέλλα:Πέτρο!
Judith:Peter!
Πέτρος:Α, γεια σου, Στέλλα.
Judith:Ah, hello, Stella.
Στέλλα:Τι κάνεις;
Judith:How are you?
Πέτρος:Καλά, εσύ;
Judith:Well, you?
Στέλλα:Μια χαρά, αλλά είμαι πολύ θυμωμένη μαζί σου. Δεν με παίρνεις τηλέφωνο. Σου στέλνω email κάθε εβδομάδα και δεν μου απαντάς ποτέ, δεν μου στέλνεις μηνύματα στο Facebook, και δεν σε βλέπω πια στο Skype. Γιατί;
Judith:I'm fine, but I'm very angry with you. You don't call me. I send you an e-mail every week and you never respond to me; you don't send me messages on Facebook, and I don't see you on Skype anymore. Why?
Πέτρος:Ξέρεις, Στέλλα, είμαι εδώ για διακοπές. Δεν μπαίνω στο Internet.
Judith:You know, Stella, I'm here on vacation. I don't get on the Internet.
Στέλλα:Καλά, καλά. Λοιπόν, τι νέα; Βλέπω τους γονείς σου πότε πότε και μαθαίνω τι κάνεις.
Judith:Fine, fine. Well, what's new? I see your parents sometimes and learn what you're doing.
Πέτρος:Καλά είμαι, δεν δουλεύω τώρα. Έχω διακοπές μέχρι τον Σεπτέμβριο.
Judith:I'm fine, I'm not working now. I have vacation until September.
Στέλλα:Βλέπεις τον Αντώνη, τη Μυρτώ;
Judith:Do you see Andoni, Myrto?
Πέτρος:Όχι, δεν τους βλέπω πια. Βλέπω όμως τον Βασίλη.
Judith:No, I don't see them anymore. I see Vasili though.
Στέλλα:Εγώ δεν τον βλέπω... Πού πας τώρα; Πάμε για καφέ;
Judith:I don't see him… Where are you going now? Shall we go for coffee?
Πέτρος:Ευχαριστώ αλλά δεν μπορώ. Με περιμένει η Έλλη στο ξενοδοχείο.
Judith:Thanks, but I can't. Elli is waiting for me at the hotel.
Στέλλα:Καλά. Γεια σου Πέτρο. Χάρηκα.
Judith:Well. Bye, Peter. I was glad [to see you].
Πέτρος:Γεια σου.
Judith:Good-bye.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Judith: Okay, let’s talk a bit about IT. How’s it looking in Greece? You know Facebook, are there a lot of Greeks on Facebook?
Iro: Yes, most of the Greeks have a profile on Facebook although there are still some Greeks usually of older age that are considered as illiterate when it comes to IT.
Judith: How about teachers? Do you see a lot of computers in Greek schools?
Iro: You can see computers in some schools but they’re really old and the teachers are following somehow a traditional approach and are incapable of using technology.
Judith: How about using the internet professionally like say on LinkedIn or sites like that?
Iro: Nowadays, more and more Greeks use the computer to find a job or to work on them. It’s most likely that your employer will ask you if you know to use the computer but of course, most of the people use computers to stay in contact with friends and family or to share photos, music or to meet new people.
Judith: So it’s a social thing.
Iro: Yes it is.
Judith: How about cell phones? How many people have cellphones in Greece? Is there even reception? I imagine it’s very difficult to have a reception on all the islands.
Iro: We have three big companies in Greece and almost everywhere in Greece you will have a reception. We could say that all Greeks have mobile phone and some people have two or three mobile phones with three different numbers and even young children have mobile phones.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Judith: Let’s take a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Iro: The first phrase we’ll look at is "Παίρνω τηλέφωνο"
Judith: It’s literally, “to take telephone” but it means “to call someone on the telephone”. There is no logic behind this, it’s just an expression that needs to be learned. "Παίρνω τηλέφωνο", “I take telephone.”
Iro: Μηνύματα is the plural of μήνυμα. It’s the same pattern as for πράγμα which becomes πράγματα.
Judith: Sometimes, δεν ends in an N and sometimes it doesn’t.
Iro: The rule is that N appears when the following word starts with κ, π, τ, ξ, ψ or the consonant combination, γκ, μπ, ντ, τσ, τζ.
Judith: So in English that would be K, P, T, X or PS (ψ) or the combinations that you heard.
Iro: If you’re into phonetics, you’ll notice that all of these consonants are plosives. The air flow stops after them. If a non-plosive consonant follows, δε does not end in N. The same happens with μην and a few other Greek words.
GRAMMAR POINT
Judith: The focus of this lesson is accusative weak personal pronouns.
Iro: We already talked about the accusative. The accusative is a grammatical case which turns "ο λογαριασμός" into "τον λογαριασμό."
Judith: It’s comparable to how “he” changes to “him” in English, he sees me but I see him.
Iro: Today let’s look at the accusative of Greek personal pronouns.
Judith: We will learn the equivalents of him, me, us, them and the like. We’ve encountered most of them already. Here is an overview.
Iro: με
Judith: Me.
Iro: σε
Judith: You, singular.
Iro: τον
Judith: Him.
Iro: την
Judith: Her.
Iro: το
Judith: It. This one doesn’t change.
Iro: μας
Judith: Us.
Iro: σας
Judith: You, plural or formally.
Iro: τους
Judith: Them, for a mixed group.
Iro: There is also τις.
Judith: There will be them, for a group of all women or all feminine words.
Iro: And τα.
Judith: Them, for a group of all neuter words. Okay, can you say all of these again?
Iro: Με, σε, τον, την, το, μας, σας, τους, τις, τα.
Judith: Okay. That just about does it for today.
