Αλ: Το κατσίκι ήταν πολύ νόστιμο, ε;
Ν: Ναι!
Αλ: Δε μου λέτε, εσείς την ξέρετε αυτή τη Ναταλία; Είναι εκείνη εκεί.
Μ: Ναι, τη Ναταλία δεν ξέρουμε; Σπουδάζαμε στο ίδιο πανεπιστήμιο.
Αλ: Πού; Στην Αθήνα;
Μ: Όχι, στο Βέλγιο, ήμασταν εκεί για δύο χρόνια.
Α: Εγώ και η Ναταλία ήμασταν στο ίδιο σπίτι δύο χρόνια και την ξέρω πολύ καλά. Αλλά εσύ γιατί ρωτάς;
Αλ: Ε, να...
Ν: Σου αρέσει;
Αλ: Ναι, είναι πολύ όμορφη.
Μ: Και πολύ συμπαθητική. Και είναι μόνη της από ό,τι ξέρω.
Α: Ναι, μόνη της είναι. Τα είχε για τρία χρόνια με κάποιον αλλά τώρα δεν είναι πια μαζί.
Αλ: Πού τα ξέρεις εσύ όλα αυτά;
Α: Α, η Ναταλία είναι φίλη μου. Παλιά, περνούσαμε αρκετό καιρό μαζί. Τώρα πια δε βλεπόμαστε συχνά, αλλά μιλάμε σχεδόν κάθε μέρα... Καλή κοπέλα είναι.
Ν: Αλλά είχε πολύ χαζές φίλες. Θυμάστε εκείνη τη Ζωή;
Α. + Αλ: (γελάνε)
Μ: ... Γιατί γελάτε;
Αλ: Δεν ξέρεις τη Ζωή.
Judith: Now one time slowly.

Narrator: Ο Αλέξης κάθεται με το Νίκο, το Μιχάλη και τον Αντρέα. Τώρα τρώνε.
Narrator: Alexis is sitting with Nikos, Michalis, and Andreas. Now they are eating.
Αλ: Το κατσίκι ήταν πολύ νόστιμο, ε;
Al: The goat was very tasty, eh?
Ν: Ναι!
N: Yes!
Αλ: Δε μου λέτε, εσείς την ξέρετε αυτή τη Ναταλία; Είναι εκείνη εκεί.
Al: Won't you tell me, do you guys know Natalia? She's that one over there.
Μ: Ναι, τη Ναταλία δεν ξέρουμε; Σπουδάζαμε στο ίδιο πανεπιστήμιο.
M: Yes, don't we know Natalia? We studied at the same university.
Αλ: Πού; Στην Αθήνα;
Al: Where? In Athens?
Μ: Όχι, στο Βέλγιο, ήμασταν εκεί για δύο χρόνια.
M: No, in Belgium, we were there for two years.
Α: Εγώ και η Ναταλία ήμασταν στο ίδιο σπίτι δύο χρόνια και την ξέρω πολύ καλά. Αλλά εσύ γιατί ρωτάς;
A: Natalia and I were in the same house for two years, and I know her very well. But why are you asking?
Αλ: Ε, να…
Al: Eh, well...
Ν: Σου αρέσει;
N: You like her?
Αλ: Ναι, είναι πολύ όμορφη.
Al: Yes, she's very beautiful.
Μ: Και πολύ συμπαθητική. Και είναι μόνη της από ό,τι ξέρω.
M: And very nice. And she's single as far as I know.
Α: Ναι, μόνη της είναι. Τα είχε για τρία χρόνια με κάποιον αλλά τώρα δεν είναι πια μαζί.
A: Yes, she's single. She had a relationship with someone [she had them with someone] for three years, but they're not together anymore.
Αλ: Πού τα ξέρεις εσύ όλα αυτά;
Al: How do you know all of this?
Α: Α, η Ναταλία είναι φίλη μου. Παλιά, περνούσαμε αρκετό καιρό μαζί. Τώρα πια δε βλεπόμαστε συχνά, αλλά μιλάμε σχεδόν κάθε μέρα... Καλή κοπέλα είναι.
A: Ah, Natalia is a friend of mine. Long ago, we spent a fair amount of time [enough] together. We don't see each other frequently anymore, but we talk almost every day... She's a good girl.
Ν: Αλλά είχε πολύ χαζές φίλες. Θυμάστε εκείνη τη Ζωή;
N: But she had very stupid friends. Do you remember Zoë?
Α. + Αλ: (γελάνε)
A. + Al: (laugh)
Μ: ... Γιατί γελάτε;
M: ... Why are you laughing?
Αλ: Δεν ξέρεις τη Ζωή.
Al: You don't know Zoë.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Judith: Okay, what can we say about informal conversation like this, you know, between friends, male friends?
Iro: Most Greeks like talking and socializing. When they meet old friends, they are likely to talk about their jobs and their everyday life or about common friends.
Judith: Most people love to gossip. People believe that women gossip more than men, but this is not always true. Men are more private and don’t share information as easily but they do like to collect information.
Iro: Most Greeks especially men, have strong opinions and they’re always ready to argue. Politics is a very popular topic, but can also be a very dangerous one.
Judith: Greeks like to gesture a lot. They have charismatic facial expression and they are always loud when they talk.
Iro: If you watch two people talking, you might get the impression that are they arguing about a very serious issue. However, they are just as likely to be talking about what they’ll have for dinner.
Judith: Let’s take a look at the vocabulary for this lesson.

Judith: Next...
Iro: Γελώ
Judith: To laugh.
Iro: Γελώ
Judith: Let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrase from this lesson.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Iro: The first phrase we’ll look at is δε μου λέτε.
Judith: This literally mean “you don’t tell me” or maybe you could translate as “won’t you tell me”.
Iro: Τα έχω με κάποιον means “to have a romantic relationship with someone”, literally, “to have them with someone”. In this dialogue we saw this in the past tense τα είχε με κάποιον, literally “she had them with someone”, but it means “she had a relationship”.

Lesson focus

Judith: The focus of this lesson is the plural form of the past tense. Today we’ll look at the endings for the regular past tense. We had the singular last time with the endings α for I, ες for you, singular and ε for he/she or it.
Iro: For example σπούδαζα.
Judith: I studied.
Iro: Σπούδαζες.
Judith: You studied.
Iro: Σπούδαζε
Judith: “He/she/it studied”. Now for the plural - the endings are αμε for we, ατε for you all and αν for they.
Iro: Σπουδάζαμε.
Judith: We studied.
Iro: Σπουδάζατε
Judith: “You studied”, when talking to several people or formally/
Iro: Σπούδαζαν
Judith: They studied.
Iro: Sometimes, mainly in colloquial Greek, you’ll hear verb forms like σπουδάζανε with the ending ανε instead of αν for the third person plural. So for “they studied” you can either say σπούδαζαν or σπουδάζανε. They mean the same thing.
Judith: Note that in all the past tense forms, except the αμε and ατε form, the accent move one syllable to the front – from the second syllable to first syllable.
Iro: This happens to most past tense verbs. For example, δουλεύω becomes δούλευα, πηγαίνω becomes πήγαινα and so on.
Judith: If the stress weren’t marked in written Greek, it would be a real pain to remember. But, like this, it is rather easy.
Iro: For verbs like μιλάω the plural past tense forms are μιλούσαμε, “we spoke” or μιλούσατε “you spoke” – plural or formal and μιλούσαν, “they spoke”.

Outro

Judith: That just about does it for today.
Iro: Listeners, have you ever dreamed about staring in one of our lessons?
Judith: If your answer is “yes”, use the Voice Recording Tool on the lesson page.
Iro: Record your voice with a click of a button.
Judith: And then play it back just as easily.
Iro: Then compare it with the native speakers in the lesson.
Judith: And adjust your pronunciation.
Iro: After a few tries, you’ll be speaking better Geek than Judith here.
Judith: Hey!
Iro: Go to GreekPod101.com and rapidly improve your Greek pronunciation.
Judith: Okay, see you next time.
Iro: Γεια σας.
