INTRODUCTION
Iro: Γεια σας, εγώ είμαι η Ηρώ.
Judith: Judith here. Upper Beginner, Season 1, Lesson 10 - Wedding Preparations. Hello and welcome to Gp, the fastest, easiest and most fun way to learn Greek.
Iro: I'm Iro and thanks again for being here with us for this Upper Beginner Season 1 lesson.
Judith: In this lesson you will learn how to describe the position of objects.
Iro: This conversation takes place at Fotini's home.
Judith: The conversation is between Rhea and Fotini.
Iro: The speakers are friends, therefore they will be speaking informal Greek.
Judith: Let’s listen to the conversation. Okay, imagine that being part of the Orthodox church, there must be a lot of different traditions related to weddings in Greece.
DIALOGUE
Φ: Ρέα μου!
Φ: Α, να, εδώ είναι, μέσα στο ντουλάπι. Μα ποιος την πήρε μέσα από την τσάντα μου;
Ρ: Θέλεις καμιά βοήθεια;
Φ: Όχι, ευχαριστώ. (Χτυπάει το κουδούνι). Α, η Μυρτώ θα είναι. Καλώς τη Μυρτώ! Έλα. Είναι και η Ρέα εδώ.
Judith: Now one time slowly.
Φ: Ρέα μου! Καλώς ήρθες!
Ρ: Γεια σου Φωτεινή, να ζήσετε!
Φ: Ευχαριστώ. Έλα, πέρασε. Άσε το παλτό σου πάνω στον καναπέ.

Judith: Now let’s hear it with the English translation.
Φ: Ρέα μου! Καλώς ήρθες!
F: My Rea! Welcome!
Ρ: Γεια σου Φωτεινή, να ζήσετε!
R: Hello, Foteini, may you live!
Φ: Ευχαριστώ. Έλα, πέρασε. Άσε το παλτό σου πάνω στον καναπέ.
F: Thank you. Come in. [Come, pass.] Leave your coat on the sofa.
Ρ: Βλέπω ετοιμάζεστε για τον γάμο.
R: I see that you're getting ready for the wedding.
Φ: Ναι. Τώρα μένουμε εδώ, πάνω από τη μητέρα του Στέφανου. Το σπίτι μας θα είναι έτοιμο σε δύο μήνες περίπου.
F: Yes. Now we're staying here, above Stefanos's mother. Our house will be ready in about two months.
Φ: Ευχαριστώ πολύ για το δώρο σου! Πολύ ωραίος καθρέφτης! Τον βάζω εκεί, κάτω από το ρολόι…
F: Thank you very much for your present! Very nice mirror! I'll put it there, under the clock…
Φ: Με συγχωρείς Ρέα, χρειάζομαι τη λίστα με τους καλεσμένους... Μα πού είναι; Την βάζω πάντα μέσα στην τσάντα μου... Δεν είναι ούτε πάνω στο γραφείο, ούτε κάτω από τα βιβλία…
F: Forgive me, Rea, I need the list with the guests… But where is it? I always put it inside my purse… It's neither on top of the desk, nor under the books…
Φ: Α, να, εδώ είναι, μέσα στο ντουλάπι. Μα ποιος την πήρε μέσα από την τσάντα μου;
F: Ah, there, here it is, in the cabinet. But who took it out of my purse?
Ρ: Θέλεις καμιά βοήθεια;
R: Do you want any help?
Φ: Όχι, ευχαριστώ. (Χτυπάει το κουδούνι). Α, η Μυρτώ θα είναι. Καλώς τη Μυρτώ! Έλα. Είναι και η Ρέα εδώ.
F: No, thank you. (The bell rings). Ah, that must be Myrto. Welcome Myrto! Come. Rea is also here.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Iro: Yes, Greek Orthodox culture is rich in pre-wedding traditions which are not always followed anymore.
Judith: Well, I think normally there’s some engagement before the wedding.
Iro: Yes, usually there is an engagement before the wedding. This can be a religious ritual or not. There is a big gathering with the couple, their parents and their closest relatives and friends.
Judith: The mother of the groom offers a present, usually jewelry to the woman. And the father of the bride gives the present to the man.
Iro: Nowadays, before the wedding, the best man organizes a bachelor party for the groom, and the bride’s friends organize a bachelorette party for her. This tradition is nor originally Greek and is sometimes skipped.
Judith: Another popular tradition of Jewish origin is the making of the bed. It takes place on the first day before the wedding. The family and friends of the couple come to their home and throw money onto the bed. They also put a baby or a young boy in order to bring fertility to the couple. Let’s take a look at the vocabulary for this lesson.

Iro: Βοήθεια
Judith: Let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Iro: The first word we'll look at is καλώς ήρθες. It’s how you welcome someone informally in Greek. The formal equivalent, which is also used for multiple people is καλώς ήρθατε.
Judith: Να ζήσετε is for wishing people well. It literally means “may you live”.
Iro: Use να ζήσετε when you’re talking to several people and να ζήσεις when you’re talking to one person.
Judith: It should be easy for you to learn the verb ετοιμάζω, “to prepare” or “to ready”. It has the same root as the adjective έτοιμος, “ready”. Isn’t it logical that ετοιμάζω, “to ready”, should be derived from “ready”?

Lesson focus

Judith: The focus of this lesson is the placement of objects.
Iro: When talking about the placement of objects, it is important to watch the use of prepositions. Words like “over”, “under”, “next to”, “inside” and the like can either be used with σε or with από, and the meaning changes depending on the prepositions you use.
Judith: The basic idea is that στο denotes immediacy while από means things are a bit further away.
Iro: For example, a chewing gum stuck on the floor is κάτω στο, while a cat underneath a table is a case of κάτω από. Same case with πάνω. You’d say that a book is πάνω στο table, but a clock is πάνω από a table.
Judith: Actually, English makes the distinction here. You’d say a book is on the table, but a clock is above the table. For κάτω there’s no such help. What’s nice is that this works for all words denoting position. For example, αριστερά στο means “left of” and “attached to”, while αριστερά από means “to the left” as a direction.
Iro: This even explains why we always say κοντά στο.
Judith: Close to.
Iro: And Μακριά από.
Judith: “Far from”. Let’s have a look at the expressions we encountered in this lesson.
Iro: Πάνω στο γραφείο.
Judith: On top of the desk.
Iro: Πάνω από τη μητέρα του Στέφανου.
Judith: Above Stefano’s mother.
Iro: Κάτω από τα βιβλία
Judith: Below the books.
Iro: Μέσα στο ντουλάπι.
Judith: Inside the cabinet.
Iro: Μέσα από την τσάντα.

Outro

Judith: “From inside the purse.” That just about does it for today.
