INTRODUCTION
Jason:In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Greek learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Hi Zenaib,

Good question!

You can say: Τα γενέθλιά μου είναι στις... and then add the date as you can see from this lesson.

I hope this helps!

All the best,

Stefania

Σας ευχαριστώ, Στεφανία! This is clear and this is helping to clarify a lot of other questions that I had relating to the genitive form.

Hi Rene,

Thank you for asking.

The cardinal (and ordinal) numbers in Greek are adjectives so they have 3 genders (some numbers have the same forms for all the genders.)

Adjectives always define a noun, even if that noun is implied and not mentioned. The noun implied here is the feminine noun μέρες (or μέρα in singular for the 1st day of the month only).

So when we say "στις είκοσι δύο Αυγούστου" what we mean is "στις είκοσι δύο (μέρες του) Αυγούστου" meaning something like "on day twenty-two of August" (lit. "days" hence the plural στις). So "στις είκοσι δύο" is feminine and in the accusative and "Αυγούστου" without an article is a masculine noun and in the genitive, a nominal determiner determining the phrase "στις είκοσι δύο" to denote time. Such genitive is called "temporal genitive" or γενική του χρόνου.

We use the cardinal numbers for all the days of the months except when we talk about the first day. If you have to say "the first of August" you need to use the feminine ordinal number for "one" and say:

στην πρώτη Αυγούστου not στη μία Αυγούστου

I hope this clears out the confusion :)

Let me know if you have more questions.

Cheers,

Stefania

Γεια σας,

I do not understand why we use στις here (feminine accusative article) with a number and a month which is masculine. What is the grammar rule that I miss?

Σασ ευχαριστώ για τη βοήθειά σας!

Γεια σου (not για) Τζοάν!

For your birthday you can say:

Είναι στις οκτώ Δεκεμβρίου.

As for the other questions, you are right:smile:!

Σας (plural) would be used for politeness in a formal situation and σου (singular) in casual situations.

Καλή μελέτη!

Για σας,

Ειναι στις οκτο (December)....8.12

Πότε είναι τα γενέθλιά σας; ... is formal and plural?

Πότε είναι τα γενέθλιά σου; .... is informal way to friends?

Ευχαριστω!
