John: Expressions Related to Drinking

John: This is Must-Know Greek Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 12. In this lesson, you'll learn expressions related to drinking.
John: Although Greeks in general aren’t people that drink excessively, you might want to know such expressions in case you hear them.
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
John: The expressions you'll be learning in this lesson are:
Chrissi: πίνω τον άμπακα (píno ton ábaka)
Chrissi: γίνομαι αλοιφή (yínome alifí)
Chrissi: ξίδια (xídia)
Chrissi: τα τσούζω (ta tsúzo)
John: Chrissi, what's our first expression?
Chrissi: πίνω τον άμπακα (píno ton ábaka)
John: literally meaning "to drink the abacus." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "to drink like a fish."

John: ...which means "to eat like a horse" in order to refer to someone who eats great quantities of food.

Chrissi: γίνομαι αλοιφή (yínome alifí)
John: This literally means "to become ointment." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "to get drunk."

John: literally meaning "vinegars." As a slang word, it means "alcoholic drinks."
