Most people have a favourite colour - what's yours, listeners? And as a bonus question, is there a colour you just can't stand? Tell us in Greek!

Hi Bibiana,
Light... = ανοιχτό...
Dark... = σκούρο...
Today they both refer to "car", you can call them synonyms. However, it is more common to say αμάξι (coming from άμαξα meaning "carriage") if you are referring to your own car or a friend's car. Αυτοκίνητο is more proper and 100% native word so it's used in more official situations, like in a driver's manual, legal documents, press, news, car products, car selling points, signs in places where they repair cars etc.

And how do I say in general for other colours - light and dark? (light blue, dark blue, light green, dark green..)
And one more question.. again I was reading your comments... about the word "αμάξι"... I have seen it more times used for car... why do you have a different word for αυτοκίνητο?

Γεια σου Μπιμπιάνα,
"Εγώ δεν έχω πρόβλημα με κανένα χρώμα (singular)."
light violet = βιολετί
purple = μοβ (http://bit.ly/1R20XzX) μωβ is an older spelling
“χρώματα γυναικών” --> κοριτσίστικα χρώματα
βερικοκί
About cyclamen you could say απαλό ροζ or φούξια depending on the tone
τουρκουάζ --> τιρκουάζ

Εγω δεν έχω πρόβλημα με κανένα χρώματα (I wanted to say with any colours... I dont know if "κανένα" is good here), αλλά το αγαπημενο μου χρώμα είναι το μωβ (could you help me saying "light violet/purple"?) Και μου αρεσουν επισης τα αλλα "χρώματα γυναικων" - το ροζ, το κοκκινο, το ασπρο... μερικες φορες το κιτρινο, και μου αρεσουν τα ειδικά χρώματα.. για παραδειγμα το βερύκοκκο, κυκλάμινο (I dont know how to say the colour of apricot, cyclamen... we use it like this in my language) και το τουρκουάζ.

Hello Simonka,
Thank you for asking this very good question.
When it comes to colours you have two options:
1) To use a color as a noun to refer to the colour in general, for example:
I like red. > Μου αρέσει το κόκκινο
Blue is a beautiful colour. > Το μπλε είναι ένα όμορφο χρώμα.
Yellow is too bright. > Το κίτρινο είναι πολύ φωτεινό.
In that case you use one specific noun and its form is in neuter gender (using the article το). The most common colours are:
κόκκινο, κίτρινο, πορτοκαλί, πράσινο, μπλε, γαλάζιο, μοβ (some people write it μωβ, but it's an outdated form), καφέ, μαύρο, γκρι, ροζ, φούξια, μπεζ, άσπρο/λευκό, ασημί, χρυσαφί/χρυσό.
2) To use the colour as an adjective to define the colour properties of a noun, for example:
I bought a red glass. > Αγόρασα ένα κόκκινο ποτήρι. ("red" defines "glass")
The blue blouse is new. > Η μπλε μπλούζα είναι καινούρια. ("blue" defines "blouse")
The sofa is yellow. > Ο καναπές είναι κίτρινος. ("yellow" defines "sofa")
In this case the colours have three genders and need to agree in gender, number and case with the noun they define. Exception to this are some colours that are indeclinable and preserve one form in all gender, numbers and cases. These colours are usually foreign words that we acquired in our language but couldn't be adapted to our declension system.
These indeclinable colours are:
μπλε, μοβ, γκρι, ροζ, φούξια, μπεζ
The declinable colours are:
κόκκινος, -η, -ο
κίτρινος, -η, -ο
πορτοκαλής - ιά - ί
πράσινος, -η, -ο
γαλάζιος, -η, -ο
καφετής - ιά - ί
μαύρος, -η, -ο
άσπρος, -η, -ο/λευκός, -η, -ο
ασημής - ιά - ί
χρυσαφής - ιά - ί/χρυσός, -η, -ο
As you can notice, many colour nouns come from the neuter form of their corresponding adjective, like πορτοκαλί for example.
I hope this clears up things a bit. If you ever have any more Greek related questions, feel free to leave a comment:smile:.
Happy studying!
