INTRODUCTION
Jenny: Hello everyone and welcome to GreekPod101.com. This is Intermediate, Season 1, lesson 17, Exploring New Tastes in Greece. I’m Jenny.
Stefania: And I’m Stefania.
Jenny: In this lesson, we’ll focus on numeral adjectives.
Stefania: This conversation takes place at a traditional taverna in Santorini. It's between Erato, Natalia and Sakis.
Jenny: The characters are good friends, so they’ll be using informal Greek.
Stefania: OK, let's listen to the conversation!
DIALOGUE
Ναταλία: Λοιπόν, για να δούμε τον κατάλογο. Χμμμ... τι θα πάρετε εσείς;
Ερατώ: Είμαι περίεργη να δοκιμάσω τους παραδοσιακούς ντοματοκεφτέδες. Είναι φτιαγμένοι από ντοματάκι Σαντορίνης που άκουσα ότι έχει πολύ ιδιαίτερη γεύση. Να πάρουμε μια ή δυο μερίδες;
Σάκης: Ας πάρουμε μία να τη μοιραστούμε και βλέπουμε. Λοιπόν, εγώ λιγουρεύτηκα σουβλάκι χοιρινό. Θα πάρω μια μερίδα με διπλή πίτα.
Ερατώ: Εμ, βέβαια. Όλα πρέπει να είναι διπλάσια για σένα! Για σαλάτα, μήπως να δοκιμάσουμε τη σαντορινιά, με το κρίθινο παξιμάδι και το ντόπιο κατσικίσιο τυρί;
Ναταλία: Ναι, ναι. Ας πάρουμε αυτή. Εγώ θα πάρω τη «μπραντάδα». Λέει «αφράτο φιλέτο μπακαλιάρου ντυμένο με κουρκούτι που συνοδεύεται από σκορδαλιά με μελιτζάνα».
Ερατώ: Καλό ακούγεται, όπως και το φαβατόρυζο. Αυτό θα πάρω... Και τι θα πιούμε; Κρασί;
Σάκης: Εννοείται! Ας δοκιμάσουμε το Νυχτέρι που ήθελα.
Ναταλία: ΟΚ. Οπότε, είμαστε έτοιμοι να παραγγείλουμε;
Ερατώ: Νομίζω ναι. Μισό λεπτό, να φωνάξω το γκαρσόνι...
Ναταλία: Σάκη πες εσύ πρώτος τι θες.

Jenny: So, let's see the menu. Hmmm... what are you guys going to have?
Ερατώ: Είμαι περίεργη να δοκιμάσω τους παραδοσιακούς ντοματοκεφτέδες. Είναι φτιαγμένοι από ντοματάκι Σαντορίνης που άκουσα ότι έχει πολύ ιδιαίτερη γεύση. Να πάρουμε μια ή δυο μερίδες;
Jenny: I'm curious to try the traditional tomato patties. They’re made of Santorini cherry tomatoes, which I’ve heard have a very special flavor. Should we get one or two servings?
Σάκης: Ας πάρουμε μία να τη μοιραστούμε και βλέπουμε. Λοιπόν, εγώ λιγουρεύτηκα σουβλάκι χοιρινό. Θα πάρω μια μερίδα με διπλή πίτα.
Jenny: Let's get one to share and we'll see. I’ve got a craving for pork souvlaki. I'll get a single serving with double pita bread.
Ερατώ: Εμ, βέβαια. Όλα πρέπει να είναι διπλάσια για σένα! Για σαλάτα, μήπως να δοκιμάσουμε τη σαντορινιά, με το κρίθινο παξιμάδι και το ντόπιο κατσικίσιο τυρί;
Jenny: But of course! Everything needs to be double for you! For a salad, should we try the Santorini salad, with the barley rusk and the local goat cheese?
Ναταλία: Ναι, ναι. Ας πάρουμε αυτή. Εγώ θα πάρω τη «μπραντάδα». Λέει «αφράτο φιλέτο μπακαλιάρου ντυμένο με κουρκούτι που συνοδεύεται από σκορδαλιά με μελιτζάνα».
Jenny: Yeah, yeah. Let's get that one. I'll get the "brantada." It says "tender cod fillet coated with boiled batter and accompanied by garlic puree with eggplant."
Ερατώ: Καλό ακούγεται, όπως και το φαβατόρυζο. Αυτό θα πάρω... Και τι θα πιούμε; Κρασί;
Jenny: It sounds good, and the "favatorizo" too. I'll get that one... And what shall we drink? Wine?
Σάκης: Εννοείται! Ας δοκιμάσουμε το Νυχτέρι που ήθελα.
Jenny: Of course! Let's try the Nykteri that I wanted.
Ναταλία: ΟΚ. Οπότε, είμαστε έτοιμοι να παραγγείλουμε;
Jenny: OK. So, are we ready to order?
Ερατώ: Νομίζω ναι. Μισό λεπτό, να φωνάξω το γκαρσόνι...
Jenny: I think so. Hold on a moment, let me call the waiter...
Ναταλία: Σάκη πες εσύ πρώτος τι θες.
Jenny: Saki you go first and say what you want.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Jenny: This conversation really made my mouth water!
Stefania: I wish I could be teleported to that taverna right now!
Jenny: Santorini cuisine sounds very delicious and unique, even for Greece!
Stefania: Yes. The island is very dry, and the volcanic soil in combination with the strong Aegean sun and the lack of water creates local produce that has a very concentrated taste.
Jenny: Such as the Santorini cherry tomato, the santorini cucumber and the white eggplant. Those, as well as the famous "fava" bean, which is protected, are the base of the local cuisine.
Stefania: Yes, and there’s also lots of fresh fish and cheese.
Jenny: OK, stop! This is torture! Let’s move on to the vocab!

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Jenny: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. What's first?
Stefania: The noun ντοματοκεφτές meaning "tomato patty."
Jenny: There goes my hunger again…
Stefania: Sorry! Anyway, this compound noun consists of the noun "ντομάτα," "tomato," and the noun "κεφτές," that by itself alone it means "meatball."
Jenny: In compound nouns, however, it means “patty,” but it can be anything, even something meat-free. The first part of this compound denotes what the patty is made of.
Stefania: Yeah. For instance ρεβυθοκεφτές means "chickpea patty,” πατατοκεφτές means "potato patty," τυροκεφτές is "cheese patty," and so on.
Jenny: OK. What's the next word?
Stefania: The verb λιγουρεύομαι.
Jenny: It means “to crave.” Just like in English, it’s often used for foods and drinks, for example when someone has a sudden desire to eat something very specific.
Stefania: Like in our sample sentence, "Το παιδί στο σινεμά λιγουρεύτηκε ποπκόρν."
Jenny: "The child at the cinema craved popcorn." Can this be used for anything else, like a desire to be with someone you’re attracted to?
Stefania: Yep, here’s an example. Όλοι στο Χόλιγουντ λιγουρεύονταν τη νεαρή αυτή ηθοποιό.
Jenny: "Everyone in Hollywood wanted this young actress." OK, and what's last?
Stefania: The neuter noun γκαρσόνι, meaning "waiter." For "waitress" we have γκαρσόνα.
Jenny: They both come from the French word garçon which means "boy."
Stefania: In the past, some people said "Γκαρσόν!" when addressing a waiter, but that sounds a bit snobby today.
Jenny: How should someone call for a waiter?
Stefania: I suggest saying Σερβιτόρε! or Σερβιτόρα!, meaning “waiter!” or “waitress!” , waving, or saying Συγγνώμη!, "Excuse me!".
Jenny: It's more respectful.
Stefania: But using γκαρσόνι when the waiter isn’t present is okay and means no disrespect.
Jenny: OK. Those are some good tips. Okay, now onto the grammar.
GRAMMAR POINT
Jenny: In this lesson, we’re going to learn about numeral adjectives. They’re divided into four groups.
Stefania: First up is cardinal numbers.
Jenny: They denote a specific number of people, animals or things, like one, two, three etc. In modern Greek they’re written out with numbers, but in some cases the ancient Greek system is still used. It’s based on the Greek alphabet.
Stefania: For example α is "one," βήτα is "two," and so on.
Jenny: Check the table in our lesson notes to see how this system works. The letter-numbers are used in the names of some people or historical events, like "Louis XIV of France," and in school grades.
Stefania: For example "first grade" is written as Α΄ τάξη, but it’s pronounced using ordinal numbers that we will see next, like πρώτη τάξη.
Jenny: As adjectives, they need to agree in gender, number and case with the noun they define. Some numerals have one form for all genders and cases and some are declinable, like one, three and four. Check out the declension and spelling notes we have in the lesson notes.
Stefania: Keep in mind that when you count abstractly, you use the neuter forms.
Jenny: The second group is the ordinal numbers. Those denote the position of something within an order of things, like first, second, and so on.
Stefania: They are all declined like the -ος, -η -ο adjectives in singular and plural, and every cardinal number except zero has a corresponding ordinal. For example, "first" is "πρώτος, -η, -ο."
Jenny: They can be written in full or abbreviations, like in English. Third, we have multiplicative numbers. Those denote how many simple parts something consists of.
Stefania: They end in -πλός, -πλή, -πλό, so they are declined like -ός, -ή, -ό adjectives in singular and plural. For example απλός, διπλός, and τριπλός. -
Jenny: “Single,” “double,” and “triple.”Last we have proportional numbers. Those denote how many times something is bigger than something else.
Stefania: They end in -πλάσιος, -πλάσια, -πλάσιο and are declined like -ος, -α -ο adjectives in singular and plural. For example διπλάσιος and τριπλάσιος.
Jenny: “Double” and “triple.” Since proportional and multiplicative numbers translate the same way in English, replacing proportional adjectives with expressions such as "twice the size of" or "two times more than," rather than saying "double," for example, helps with understanding the difference.
Stefania: Ooh, that's a good tip!

Εγώ δεν εχω δοκιμάσει ποτέ σαντορινιότικο φαγητό, αλλά σκοπεύω να παω Σαντορίνη το επόμενο καλοκαίρι εκεί, οπότε θα δοκιμάσω. Φαίνεται πολύ νόστιμο. Λιγουρεύτηκα τα σαντορινιότικα φαγητά.

That's a great question :)


Μοιράζομαι in the passive voice, means that the speaker will be using or consuming something together with someone else. So the verb's person (either 1st, 2nd or 3rd) is included.


Μοιράζω in the active voice, means that the speaker will be splitting or distributing something to other people to use or consume. So the verb's person (either 1st, 2nd or 3rd) is NOT included.


Some examples:


Η μητέρα μοίρασε μια σοκολάτα στα δύο παιδιά της. (The mother had no chocolate, only her kids did.)

Η μητέρα μοιράστηκε μια σοκολάτα με τα δύο παιδιά της. (The mother had some chocolate and here kids as well.)


As you can see, even the prepositions use change depending on whether the verb is in the active voice (μοιράζω σε - to distribute something TO others) or in the passive voice (μοιράζομαι με... to share WITH).


If you've listened already to Intermediate series, lesson 1, in the grammar section, where "voice" is being examined, it is mentioned:


"Sometimes, the meaning of a verb might differ slightly between active and passive voice.

For example: γελώ ("I laugh") vs. γελιέμαι ("I am being fooled"). The meaning changes because it would be wrong to say "I am laughed" in the passive voice."

could you explain in the dialogue why μοιράζω is in the future simple passive form? in other words, why isn't it "ας πάρουμε μία μερίδα να την μοιρασούμε"?
