Lesson Transcript

Hi, everyone! I’m Chrissi Papadopoulou.
Γεια σε όλους! Είμαι η Χρυσή Παπαδοπούλου.
Welcome to the Greek Whiteboard Lessons.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to say where you're from in Greek.
Let's get started.
Okay, let's look at the dialogue.
Imagine two people chatting and getting to know each other in a friendly environment.
Από πού είσαι?
(Apó pú íse?)
Where are you from?
Είμαι από την Αθήνα.
(Íme apó tin Athína.)
I'm from Athens.
Now let's look at the sentence pattern.
This pattern will be the structure that all of our dialogues will follow.
Είμαι από [PLACENAME].
(Íme apó [PLACENAME].)
I'm from [PLACENAME].
Please note that this sentence pattern requires a definite article in accusative case
before the name of the place.
So you always see τον, τη, την or το
between the word από and the place depending on the gender of the city or region.
Now let's look at some speaking examples.
Είμαι από τη Θεσσαλονίκη.
(Íme apó ti Thesaloníki.)
I’m from Thessaloniki.
Είμαι από το Ηράκλειο.
(Íme apó to Iráklio.)
I’m from Heraklion.
Είμαι από την Αλεξανδρούπολη.
(Íme apó tin Alexandrúpoli.)
I’m from Alexandroupoli.
Θεσσαλονίκη.
(Thesaloníki.)
Ηράκλειο.
(Iráklio)
Αλεξανδρούπολη.
(Alexandrúpoli)
Okay, now let's take a look at a few other useful phrases
that we use in Greece to state where we are from.
First we have
Βόρια Ελλάδα.
(vória Eláda)
Northern Greece.
Βόρια Ελλάδα.
(vória Eláda)
And next we have
Νότια Ελλάδα.
(nótia Eláda)
Southern Greece.
Νότια Ελλάδα.
(nótia Eláda)
So a person who is from Thesaloníki may also say,
Είμαι από τη Βόρια Ελλάδα.
(Íme apó ti vória Eláda.)
I'm from Northern Greece.
But if a person is from Heraklion, they would say,
Είμαι από τη Νότια Ελλάδα.
(Íme apó ti nótia Eláda.)
I'm from Southern Greece.
You probably already know that Greek islands are a big part of Greece.
Therefore, we also use the following phrases.
Νησιωτική Ελλάδα.
(nisiotikí Eláda.)
Insular Greece.
Νησιωτική Ελλάδα.
(nisiotikí Eláda.)
And we also have
Υπηροτική Ελλάδα.
(ipirotikí Eláda.)
Mainland Greece.
Υπηροτική Ελλάδα.
(ipirotikí Eláda.)
In this case, a person from Athens would say,
Είμαι από την Υπηροτική Ελλάδα.
(Íme apó tin ipirotikí Eláda.)
I'm from Mainland Greece.
However, a person from Heraklion would say,
Είμαι από τη Νησιωτική Ελλάδα.
(Íme apó ti nisiotikí Eláda.)
I'm from Insular Greece.
Because Heraklion is on the island of Crete.
