Hi everyone! I’m Alisha.
Welcome to Conversational Phrases!
We’ve found that the best way to learn a language is to speak it from day one! And the best way to start speaking is to learn phrases that you’ll use in real conversations.
In this lesson, you’ll learn conversational phrases to ask and answer the question, "How do you say this?" After watching this video, you’ll be able to ask someone how a word is pronounced.
Now, let’s take a look at some conversational phrases!
Listen to the dialogue.
Πώς λέγεται αυτό; (Pós léyete aftó?)
Λέγεται «πάρκινγκ». (Léyete "párking".)
Once more with the English translation.
Πώς λέγεται αυτό; (Pós léyete aftó?)
“How do you say this?”
Λέγεται «πάρκινγκ». (Léyete "párking".)
"It's 'parking lot.'”
First of all you'll need to learn how to say “How do you say this?”
That's:
Πώς λέγεται αυτό; (Pós léyete aftó?)
Listen to it again:
Πώς λέγεται αυτό;, Πώς λέγεται αυτό; (Pós léyete aftó?, Pós léyete aftó?)
This Greek sentence means something like " What is this called? ” But it means “How do you say this?”
Now, how do you answer this question?
The pattern is:
Λέγεται [ ]. (Léyete [ ].)
This Greek sentence literally translates into " It is called [word]. .
For example:
"It's 'parking lot.'”
Λέγεται «πάρκινγκ»., Λέγεται «πάρκινγκ». (Léyete "párking"., Léyete "párking".)
