No matter where you are, you will always have some place to be! Today, we'll look at a question that will give you the tools to ask how much time you have left to get there. We'll also give you the tools to understand the answer!
In Greek, "What time is it?" is Τι ώρα (Ti óra íne?)
Τι ώρα (Ti óra íne?)
Let's break it down by syllable: ti o-ra i-ne.
Now let's hear it once again, Τι ώρα (Ti óra íne?)
The first word, τι (ti), means "what." Next, we have ώρα (óra), which in English is "hour:" ώρα (óra). Then, we have είναι (íne), which literally means "is it."
All together, we have Τι ώρα είναι; (Ti óra íne?) Literally, this means "What time is it?"
Let's go over hours here. "Hour" in Greek is ώρα (óra).
ώρα (óra)
However, you will never hear this word while asking for the time. When talking about (hours) o'clock, you just have to say the number and that's it.
one o'clock - μία (mía)
two o'clock - δύο (dío)
three o'clock - τρεις (tris)
four o'clock - τέσσερις (téseris)
five o'clock - πέντε (pénde)
six o'clock - έξι (éxi)
seven o'clock - εφτά (eftá)
eight o'clock - οχτώ (ohtó)
nine o'clock - εννιά (eniá)
ten o'clock - δέκα (déka)
eleven o'clock - έντεκα (éndeka)
twelve o'clock - δώδεκα (dódeka)
Let's cover how to answer the question Τι ώρα είναι (Ti óra íne) in Greek now! First, you answer Είναι… (Íne…) and then the time.
Let's hear it one more time, Είναι… (Íne…)
Let's try with six o'clock. "It's six o'clock" in Greek is Είναι έξι. (Íne éxi.)
Let's break it down by syllable: i-ne e-xi.
Now let's hear it once again, Είναι έξι. (Íne éxi.)
The first word, είναι (íne), means "it is:" i-ne. Then, you have the time, which is the number έξι (éxi), "six o'clock:" e-xi.
All together, we have Είναι έξι. (Íne éxi.)
Let's go over minutes now. "Minutes" in Greek is λεπτά (leptá).
λεπτά (leptá)
Let's break it down by syllable: le-pta.
In Greek, first you say the number for "hours" followed by the conjunction και (ke), "and," and then the number of "minutes" past the hour. For the minutes to the hour, you use παρά (pará), "to."
For example, "It's 3:20" in Greek is Είναι τρεις και είκοσι. (Íne tris ke íkosi.)
"It's 5:55" in Greek is Είναι πέντε παρά πέντε.(Íne pénde pará pénde.) Here, we are literally saying "five to five."
"It's 8:34" in Greek is Είναι οχτώ και τριάντα τέσσερα (Íne ohtó ke triánda tésera.)
Even Greek has words for the set times of the day:
"Midday" in Greek is μεσημέρι (mesiméri).
μεσημέρι (mesiméri)
"Midnight" is μεσάνυχτα (mesánihta).
μεσάνυχτα (mesánihta)
Lastly, "quarter" in Greek is τέταρτο (tétarto). Therefore, "It's 2:15" in Greek can also be Είναι δύο και τέταρτο. (Íne dío ke tétarto.)
Είναι δύο και τέταρτο. (Íne dío ke tétarto.)
Okay, to close out today's lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for shouting it out loud. You'll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so Καλή τύχη (kalí týchi), which means "good luck!" in Greek.
