Lesson Transcript

Today, we're going to work on getting your package one step closer to its intended destination. In the previous lesson, we discussed the phrase "I would like to send this package to Italy," which was Θα ήθελα να στείλω αυτό το πακέτο στην Ιταλία. (Tha íthela na stílo aftó to pakéto stin Italía.)
Let's break it down by syllable: Tha i-the-la na sti-lo af-to to pa-ke-to stin I-ta-li-a.
Again, the location is interchangeable. When sending a package though, you will probably have to explain what's in the package. They may even ask you "What's in the package?" In Greek, this is Τι έχει το πακέτο; (Ti éhi to pakéto?)
Τι έχει το πακέτο; (Ti éhi to pakéto?)
Let's break it down by syllable: Ti e-hi to pa-ke-to?
Now let's hear it once again, Τι έχει το πακέτο; (Ti éhi to pakéto?)
The first word, τι (ti) means "what." Next, we have the third person verb έχει (éhi), which in English is "has:" éhi. Finally, we have το πακέτο (to pakéto), which is the Greek word for "the package."
To recap here, we have Τι έχει το πακέτο; (Ti éhi to pakéto?) Literally, this means "What does the package have?" If you want to be sure to name all the things you are sending correctly, English is perfectly accepted.
Another way in which they can ask you "What's in the package" is Τι περιέχει το πακέτο; (Ti periéhi to pakéto?) This translates as "What does the package contain?"
Τι περιέχει το πακέτο; (Ti periéhi to pakéto?)
Let's break it down by syllable: Ti pe-ri-e-hi to pa-ke-to?
Now let's hear it once again, Τι περιέχει το πακέτο; (Ti periéhi to pakéto?)
The first word, τι (ti), means "what," and then you have περιέχει (periéhi) - "(it) contains:" pe-ri-e-hi. Finally, you have το (to), the definite article for neuter nouns ("the"), and πακέτο (pakéto) - "package:" pa-ke-to.
πακέτο (pakéto)
All together, we have Τι περιέχει το πακέτο; (Ti periéhi to pakéto?) This literally means "What does the package contain?"
Τι περιέχει το πακέτο; (Ti periéhi to pakéto?)
Please remember that even in Greece, as in many other countries, there are some rules for things you can or cannot send. You can learn about these issues visiting the Greek Post website at www.elta.gr.
Okay, to close out today's lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for shouting it out loud. You'll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so Καλή τύχη (kalí týchi), which means "good luck!" in Greek.
