Hi Bibiana,
Don't be shy! No one will think bad of you. In Greece we say "μισή ντροπή δική μου, μισή ντροπή δικιά σου." As in 'both parties have a reason to be ashamed of'. For example, in this case, you are asking for a discount but the shop owner has everything overpriced already. So the shame goes 50/50:grin:.

Hi Bibiana,
I definitely suggest the formal version you mentioned for people you don't know. If you know them though, the singular can be acceptable among people of the same age.
Bargaining is quite common in souvenir shops or with local street vendors (except from vendors that sell food like honey, salep, cotton candy, chestnuts and dry nuts). Try it next time. Just ask if they'll give you a discount for buying more items... or pretend it's too expensive and see what the vendor says.

I think it would be more correct to say "μπορείτε να το κόψετε λίγο;" dont you think? In the formal way...
Is bargaining really usual in Greece? I have never tried it...

Hi Stefania,
I love the feature that we can add the vocabulary to the flashcards, would it possible to add the phrases too? I found the flashcards very useful in practicing comprehension and learning phrases that come with the seasonal word lists.
Thank you,

Hi Richard Armostrong!
Bargaining is okay in souvenir shops in touristy places or in small stores operated by their owners (not by employees), but not in mini markets, kiosk or small grocery stores. A good indication is also the absence of price tags. There is some bargaining etiquette you need to follow.
- First, don't bargain if you just have a few cheap items. People will think you are cheap.
- If you are bargaining without any real intention to buy, it’s considered bad manners.
- When you are willing to buy many things that add up, you can ask beforehand whether they could lower or just round the price for you.
- Greeks are not pushy vendors. You can always look around without any hassle. If you ask for a price and then pretend to walk away, most won't go after you offering you a better price, although some might!
- Something discreet that you can do is to ask whether there is something similar at a lower price. They'll get the point and either offer you a better price or show you something cheaper.
- Just be friendly, nice, polite, and say "Γεια σας!" while smiling when you walk inside a store.
Kind regards,
Stefania
