INTRODUCTION
Judith: I’m Judith here. Absolute Beginner Season 1 Lesson 17, Leading an Active Life in Greece.
Iro: Hi. My name is Iro and I’m joined here by Judith.
Judith: Hello everyone and welcome back to GreekPod101.com.
Iro: What are we learning today?
Judith: In this lesson, you will learn how to talk about your hobbies.
Iro: This conversation takes place in Vasilis’ home in Athens.
Judith: The conversation is between Petros and his friend Vasilis.
Iro: The speakers are friends therefore they will be speaking informal Greek.
Judith: Let’s listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUES
Πέτρος:Πώς περνάς το χειμώνα στην Αθήνα;
Βασίλης:Ήσυχα... Υπάρχουν βέβαια πολλά πράγματα να κάνεις, αλλά εγώ δε βγαίνω πολύ.
Πέτρος:Τι κάνεις το βράδυ, βλέπεις τηλεόραση;
Βασίλης:Όχι, κάνω σπορ. Μου αρέσει πολύ το τένις και το ποδόσφαιρο. Εσένα, σου αρέσουν τα σπορ;
Πέτρος:Ναι, αλλά δεν έχω πολύ χρόνο. Πηγαίνω για μπάσκετ ή ποδόσφαιρο κάθε Σάββατο ή Κυριακή.
Βασίλης:Παίζεις ακόμα κιθάρα;
Πέτρος:Ναι, υπάρχει στην Καλαμάτα ένα γκρουπ που παίζει έθνικ μουσική και παίζω κι εγώ καμιά φορά.
Βασίλης:Ωραία. Σινεμά πηγαίνεις;
Πέτρος:Ναι, βέβαια, μου αρέσει πολύ το σινεμά, αλλά πιο πολύ μου αρέσουν οι συναυλίες. Στη Σάμο όμως δε θα κάνω τίποτα... Δεν υπάρχει τίποτα εκεί.
Βασίλης:Έλα, μην κάνεις έτσι, κάτι θα υπάρχει κι εκεί.
English Host: Let’s hear the conversation one time slowly.
Πέτρος:Πώς περνάς το χειμώνα στην Αθήνα;
Βασίλης:Ήσυχα... Υπάρχουν βέβαια πολλά πράγματα να κάνεις, αλλά εγώ δε βγαίνω πολύ.

English Host: Now let’s hear it with the English translation.
Πέτρος:Πώς περνάς το χειμώνα στην Αθήνα;
Judith:How is the winter in Athens going?
Βασίλης:Ήσυχα... Υπάρχουν βέβαια πολλά πράγματα να κάνεις, αλλά εγώ δε βγαίνω πολύ.
Judith:Calmly. There are of course many things to do, but I don't go out much.
Πέτρος:Τι κάνεις το βράδυ, βλέπεις τηλεόραση;
Judith:What do you do in the evening, watch TV?
Βασίλης:Όχι, κάνω σπορ. Μου αρέσει πολύ το τένις και το ποδόσφαιρο. Εσένα, σου αρέσουν τα σπορ;
Judith:No, I play sports. I like tennis and soccer very much. And you, do you like sports?
Πέτρος:Ναι, αλλά δεν έχω πολύ χρόνο. Πηγαίνω για μπάσκετ ή ποδόσφαιρο κάθε Σάββατο ή Κυριακή.
Judith:Yes, but I don't have much time. I go to [play] basketball or soccer every Saturday or Sunday.
Βασίλης:Παίζεις ακόμα κιθάρα;
Judith:Do you still play the guitar?
Πέτρος:Ναι, υπάρχει στην Καλαμάτα ένα γκρουπ που παίζει έθνικ μουσική και παίζω κι εγώ καμιά φορά.
Judith:Yes, there's a group in Kalamata that plays ethnic music, and I also play guitar sometimes.
Βασίλης:Ωραία. Σινεμά πηγαίνεις;
Judith:Nice. Do you go to the movies?
Πέτρος:Ναι, βέβαια, μου αρέσει πολύ το σινεμά, αλλά πιο πολύ μου αρέσουν οι συναυλίες. Στη Σάμο όμως δε θα κάνω τίποτα... Δεν υπάρχει τίποτα εκεί.
Judith:Yes, of course, I like cinema very much, but I like concerts more. In Samos, however, I won't do anything... There isn't anything there.
Βασίλης:Έλα, μην κάνεις έτσι, κάτι θα υπάρχει κι εκεί.
Judith:Come on, don't do that, there will be something there too.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Judith: Let’s take a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Iro: The first word we’ll look at is "Ήσυχος"
Judith: Calm.
Iro: It’s an adjective. The related adverb in Greek is "ήσυχα"
Judith: Calmly.
Iro: We will have a separate lesson on adjectives and adverbs soon and you’ll see that the “-a” ending is a give away.
Judith: The word "εσένα" in this dialogue is more or less the same as "εσύ,". That is an emphasized way to say you.
Iro: I trust that we don’t have to translate the Greek word tennis, ethnic and group. Don’t let yourself be fooled by the unusual spelling. They’re exactly the same as in English.
Judith: In today’s dialogue, Petros said that there is a group that plays ethnic music in Kalamata. The key Greek words are "υπάρχει ένα γκρουπ που παίζει...". Here the "που" does not mean “where” but “who” or “which.” It is the Greek relative pronoun. Greek does not make a difference between who or which. It’s always "που." We’ll look at relative clauses in the next level.
GRAMMAR POINT
Judith: The focus of this lesson is υπάρχει/υπάρχουν, αρέσει/αρέσουν. They are two Greek verbs that are a bit tricky to use. They are αρέσει and υπάρχει. Both of these verbs are only used in the third person, only it or they.
Iro: Υπάρχει is the easier of the two. Υπάρχει used in singular means “there is” or “it exists.” And in the plural υπάρχουν means “there are” or “they exist.”
Judith: So whenever you’re talking about one monument, one building, one person or the like, you have to use υπάρχει. When you’re talking about more than one, use υπάρχουν.
Iro: The same goes for αρέσει and αρέσουν . Use αρέσει for singular noun and αρέσουν for plural.
Judith: There are no other forms. The regular conjugation does not apply. The problem is in the translation. "Αρέσει" is translated as “it pleases,” So Greeks say things like "Μου αρέσει η μουσική".
Iro: “The music pleases me.” In English you’d say “I like the music.” So you have to turn around your way of thinking.
Judith: To talk about more than one thing that you’d like, use αρέσουν - "Μου αρέσουν τα εστιατόρια".
Iro: Literally, “the restaurants please me.” “I like restaurants.”
Judith: And if you’re talking about somebody else’s likes, adjust the pronoun, use σου, του, μας, σας and so on.
Iro: If you have previously studied Spanish or Italian or German, you’ll recognize that this construction is used exactly the same way as “me gusta”, “mi piace” or "mir gefällt" in those languages. Well, that just about does it for today.
