Iro: This conversation takes place at a beach, and later at a café.
Judith: The conversation is between wedding guests.
Iro: The speakers know each other therefore they will be speaking informal Greek.
Judith: Let’s listen to the conversation. Okay, we mention a lot of Greeks food in this listen. Can you tell me a little bit more about what Greeks typically eat?

Νατ: Θέλετε καλαμαράκια;
Ε: Εγώ δεν τρώω χταπόδι. Θέλει κανείς χορτόπιτα;
Ρ: Ναι, εγώ.
Νατ: Ναι, αλλά χωρίς τυρί. Συνήθως βάζουν πολλή φέτα.
Αντ: Έχουν πολλά ψάρια εδώ.

Αλ: Ναι, να πάρουμε πολλά καλαμαράκια.
Al: Yes, let's get a lot of calamari.
Ε: Ναι, αλλά τηγανητά; Έχουν πολλές θερμίδες! Εγώ θέλω να κάνω δίαιτα.
E: Yes, but fried? It has [they have] a lot of calories! I want to diet.

Ε: Εγώ δεν τρώω χταπόδι. Θέλει κανείς χορτόπιτα;
E: I don't eat octopus. Does anyone want a vegetable pie?
Ρ: Ναι, εγώ.
R: Yes, I [do].

POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Iro: The traditional Mediterranean diet is low in calories, helps to maintain a healthy heart and to prevent cancer.
Judith: There’s fresh fruits, vegetables, whole wheat products, virgin olive oil as well, as dairy products. All of these are consumed daily.
Iro: People also have one or two glasses of red wine every day.
Judith: People eat potatoes, eggs, chicken, fish, olives, legumes, nuts, almonds and so on weekly. And red meat is consumed only once a week.
Iro: This diet must also be combined with daily exercise.
Judith: Unfortunately, people nowadays tend to eat processed and junk food.
Iro: Mostly because their busy lifestyle doesn’t allow them to prepare their own meals and to be more selective when it comes to food.

Judith: Let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Iro: The first word we’ll look at is ταβερνάκι - is a small ταβέρνα.
Judith: The άκι is called a diminutive ending. It makes everything smaller and cuter.
Iro: When ordering a dish, people usually use the word μία. No matter is the word if the following word is masculine, feminine neuter or even plural.
Judith: The idea is that you talking about a portion.
Iro: Μία μερίδα And then it doesn’t matter if the following word is μελιτζανοσαλάτα.
Judith: Eggplant salad or …
Iro: Τηγανητές πατάτες.
Judith: “French fries”.

Lesson focus

Judith: The focus of this lesson is the declension of πολύς. The word πολύς is an adjective, but it does not fit our usual declension patterns for adjectives. It is slightly irregular. Iro, can you tell us the forms, maybe with a sample noun for each?
Iro: Πολύς θόρυβος.
Judith: “A lot of noise.” This is for nominative or accusative.
Iro: Πολλή κίνηση.
Judith: “A lot of traffic.” Here, the nominative and accusative are the same for feminine nouns.
Iro: Πολύ κρασί.
Judith: “A lot of wine.” Again, nominative and accusative are the same.
Iro: Πολλοί άνθρωποι, πολλούς ανθρώπους.
Judith: “A lot of people”, nominative or accusative are the same.
Iro: Πολλές γυναίκες.
Judith: “A lot of women”, nominative and accusative are the same.
Iro: Πολλά αυτοκίνητα.
Judith: “A lot of cars”, again nominative and accusative are the same. So for the plural, the endings are actually predictable, it’s just the singular that’s troublesome.
Iro: Particular difficulty is the different spelling of the final /i/ sounds.

Outro

Judith: Double check this when you look at this lesson’s notes. That just about does it for today.
