INTRODUCTION
Jason:In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Greek learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
GRAMMAR POINT
Jason:In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question ""Are you hungry?"" In Greek this is
Chrissi:Πεινάτε;
Jason:The first word in the question is
Chrissi:πεινάτε
Jason:""meaning are you hungry"" in English.
Chrissi:(Slow, by syllable) πεινάτε
Jason:Listen again and repeat.
Chrissi:πεινάτε
{Pause}
Jason:This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible.
Jason:Now master the following pattern and responses to the question Are you hungry??
Chrissi:Ναι, πεινάω λίγο
Jason:""Yes, I'm a little hungry.. Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Chrissi:(Slow) Ναι, πεινάω λίγο
{pause}
Jason:Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
Chrissi:ναι
Jason:meaning yes.
Chrissi:(Slow, by syllable) ναι
Jason:Now repeat
Chrissi:ναι
{Pause}
Jason:And after that
Chrissi:πεινάω
Jason:meaning I'm hungry.
Chrissi:(Slow, by syllable) πεινάω
Jason:Now repeat.
Chrissi:πεινάω
{Pause}
Jason:And next
Chrissi:λίγο
Jason:meaning a little.
Chrissi:(Slow, by syllable) λίγο
Jason:Now repeat.
Chrissi:λίγο
{Pause}
Jason:Listen to the speaker say, Yes, I'm a little hungry., and then repeat.
Chrissi:Ναι, πεινάω λίγο
{pause}
Jason:To expand on the pattern, replace a little with enough.
Chrissi:αρκετά
Jason:enough
Chrissi:(slow) αρκετά (regular) αρκετά
Jason:Listen to the phrase again, this time with enough
Chrissi:Ναι, πεινάω αρκετά
Jason:It mostly stays the same. Simply replace a little. Say Yes, I'm hungry enough.
{pause}
Chrissi:Ναι, πεινάω αρκετά
Jason:To use a different phrase, replace enough with very.
Chrissi:πολύ
Jason:very
Chrissi:(slow) πολύ (regular) πολύ
Jason:Listen to the phrase again, this time with very
Chrissi:Ναι, πεινάω πολύ
Jason:It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the word for enough. Say Yes, I'm very hungry.
{pause}
Chrissi:Ναι, πεινάω πολύ
Jason:To expand on the pattern, replace very with somewhat.
Chrissi:κάπως
Jason:somewhat
Chrissi:(slow) κάπως (regular) κάπως
Jason:Listen to the phrase again, this time with somewhat
Chrissi:Ναι, πεινάω κάπως
Jason:It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the word for very. Say Yes, I'm somewhat hungry.
{pause}
Chrissi:Ναι, πεινάω κάπως

Jason:Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting Greece and a someone asks you if you're hungry. You want to answer Yes, I'm a little hungry.. Respond to the question.
Chrissi:Πεινάτε; (five seconds) Ναι, πεινάω λίγο
Jason:Now you want to say Yes, I'm hungry enough. Respond to the question.

Γεια σου Τζοάν,

πάρα = very

Guten Appetit (that's in German) = καλή όρεξη = enjoy your meal

I hope this helps!

Γεια σου Γιολάντ,

Καλά είμαι, εσύ; Σε ευχαριστώ για το μήνυμά σου!

Μπορείς να πεις "Είμαι ευτυχισμένη με τη ζωή μου" (I'm happy with my life). You need accusative here.

Genitive for η ζωή is της ζωής. You can also say "Θα πάω να φάω". The verb "to eat" is irregular, so it's a bit tricky.

Δυστυχώς ζω μακριά από την Ελλάδα και δεν ξέρω τι καιρό κάνει εκεί:disappointed:.

Εκεί που είσαι η άνοιξη πρέπει να έχει αρχίσει! Τι ωραία!

Αν έχεις ερωτήσεις, πες μου σε παρακαλώ!

Να ΄σαι καλά!

Γεια σου Στεφάνια,

Πως είστε;

Εγώ, είμαι ούτε κουρασμένη ούτε νυσταγμένη.

Είμαι ευτυχής η ζωή μου. (what is the genitive?

Πώς είναι ο καιρός σήμερα στην Αθήνα;

Εδώ είναι ηλιόλουστος και ζεστός.

Τώρα πεινάω πολύ. Θα πάω να τρώω

Γεια σας, ευχαριστώ for your good answers and corrections

Γιολαντ
