John: Hi, everyone, and welcome back to GreekPod101.com. I'm John.
Chrissi: And I'm Chrissi!
John: This is Must-Know Greek Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 3. In this lesson, you'll learn slang words to describe other people.
John: Be careful when using these words in front of the person you are describing!
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
John: The words you'll be learning in this lesson are:
Chrissi: φυτό (fitó)
Chrissi: ματσό (matsó)
Chrissi: μαμόθρεφτο (mamóthrefto)
Chrissi: ψώνιο (psónio)
John: Chrissi, what's our first word?
Chrissi: φυτό (fitó)
John: literally meaning "plant." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "boringly studious person, nerd."
Chrissi: [SLOW] φυτό [NORMAL] φυτό
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Chrissi: φυτό
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this slang expression when you want to refer to someone who is very studious but has poor social skills.
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Chrissi: [NORMAL] Και θα κάτσεις μέσα απόψε για να διαβάσεις; Φυτό! Ε φυτό! [SLOW] Και θα κάτσεις μέσα απόψε για να διαβάσεις; Φυτό! Ε φυτό!
John: "And you're staying at home tonight to study? Nerd! You nerd!"
Chrissi: [NORMAL] Και θα κάτσεις μέσα απόψε για να διαβάσεις; Φυτό! Ε φυτό!
John: Okay, what's the next word?
Chrissi: ματσό (matsó), which is a contraction of ματσωμένος (matsoménos).
John: Literally meaning "loaded" as in "rich."
Chrissi: [SLOW] ματσό [NORMAL] ματσό
John: Listeners, please repeat.

Chrissi: [NORMAL] Όλοι οι ματσό μαζεύονται στη λέσχη τα Σαββατοκύριακα.
John: Okay, what's our next expression?
Chrissi: μαμόθρεφτο (mamóthrefto)
John: Literally meaning "mom-fed." As a slang expression, it means "mama's boy/girl."
Chrissi: [SLOW] μαμόθρεφτο [NORMAL] μαμόθρεφτο
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Chrissi: μαμόθρεφτο
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this slang expression when you want to refer to a person who’s a mama's boy (or girl.) Be careful when you use this word, as saying this to someone's face might offend them. Among friends, though, it’s OK to use in terms of friendly criticism.
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Chrissi: [NORMAL] Έλα στο πάρτι, μην είσαι μαμόθρεφτο! [SLOW] Έλα στο πάρτι, μην είσαι μαμόθρεφτο!
