Hi John,

That is a great question actually!

When humans have a loud voice, we say δυνατή φωνή, yes. In general, using the word φωνή for an animal is not so appropriate, because it implies speech, communication, something refined. For animals, we use the word "sound" ήχος. Ο ήχος της φάλαινας. The sound of the whale. However, φωνή is OK to use in compound words for sound making things or animals (like τηλέφωνο). Βροντόφωνος is appropriate for a huge animal such as a whale because the sound it makes sounds like a βροντή, meaning "thunder". So βροντόφωνος is appropriate for non-human sounds that are loud and deep that could cause a vibration when emitted. It's not a common word, so maybe that's why it doesn't appear in your dictionary.

All the best,

Stefania

Είναι το βροντόφων η σωστη λεξη στην δεύτερη γραμμή; Όταν ψαχνω για την λέξη στο λεξικον, βρήκα την λεξη "δυνατος"

Hello Joanna,

Thank you very much for your message.

These animals are not the most common words that a foreigner first learns 😅, but the most of them are basic words.😳

To be honest, I didn't know what "εφημερόπτερα" were.

The Greek vocabulary is one the richest ones. Don't worry though, with stable and slow steps you can do it! 😁

Have fun learning Greek with us.

All the best,

Those are almost all new words to me. A bit overwhelming.
