Eric: Welcome to 3-Minute Greek Season 1, Lesson 25 - On the Phone. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to understand basic phone vocabulary in Greek.
Body
Eric: Here's a standard and casual way to say 'Hello. (answering)' in Greek.
Chrissi: [Normal] Ναι; (Ne?)
Eric: This expression has only one word meaning 'yes'
Chrissi: [Normal] ναι [Slow] ναι (ne)
Eric: Listen again to the casual expression meaning 'Hello. (answering)'
Chrissi: [Slow] Ναι; [Normal] Ναι;
Eric: Ok, now let's see the way to say 'This is Maria.'
Chrissi: [Normal] Η Μαρία είμαι. (I María íme.)
Eric: First is the feminine definite article.
Chrissi: [Normal] η [Slow] η (i)
Eric: Next is the person’s name, 'Maria'
Chrissi: [Normal] Μαρία [Slow] Μαρία (María)
Eric: Last is the verb meaning 'I am'
Chrissi: [Normal] είμαι [Slow] είμαι (íme)
Eric: Listen again to the sentence meaning 'This is Maria.'

Eric: Next up is the way to say 'May I talk to Kostas?'
Chrissi: [Normal] Θα μπορούσα να μιλήσω στον Κώστα; (Tha borúsa na milíso ston Kósta?)
Eric: First is a verb form meaning 'may I'
Chrissi: [Normal] θα μπορούσα [Slow] θα μπορούσα (tha borúsa)
Eric: Next is a verb form meaning 'to talk'

Eric: Next is the prepositional, masculine, definite article meaning 'to'

Eric: Listen again to the question meaning 'May I talk to Kostas?'

Eric: Finally, here is a way to say 'I'll call again later.'
Chrissi: [Normal] Θα ξανακαλέσω αργότερα. (Tha xanakaléso argótera.)
Eric: First is the verb form meaning 'I will call again'
Chrissi: [Normal] θα ξανακαλέσω [Slow] θα ξανακαλέσω (tha xanakaléso)
Eric: Last is the adverb meaning 'later'
Chrissi: [Normal] αργότερα [Slow] αργότερα (argótera)
Eric: Listen again to the sentence meaning 'I'll call again later.'

Cultural Insight
Eric: Now it's time for a quick cultural insight.
Chrissi: Ιf instead of Ναι; (Ne?), we answer with Παρακαλώ; (Parakaló?) the phrase becomes more polite and formal.
If the person is not there, you can say Καλέστε αργότερα (Kaléste argótera), meaning "Call later" or Δεν είναι εδώ (Den íne edó) meaning "He/she is not here."
