Πελάτισσα:Καλά. Θα ήθελα αυτήν την πολυθρόνα. Έχω πιστωτική.
Υπάλληλος:Κανένα πρόβλημα.

Υπάλληλος:Ευχαριστώ πολύ.

Έλλη:Τώρα έχει εκατόν ένα!
Judith:Now he has 101!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Judith: Okay what is this rosary that she’s talking about? Is she religious?
Iro: The word κομπολόι is derived from κόμπος and λέω, to say, tell. It has its roots in the Islamic rosary which appeared in Greece after 1453. The Greeks became familiar with this object and eventually merged it into their own culture.
Judith: I know that Buddhist monks wear similar items around the necks and orthodox and Catholic monks also use rosaries. And the purpose of the rosary is always to help the people praying to count their prayers correctly.
Iro: The Greek κομπολόγια however are not used for prayers. Instead people use them to relax, to have them quit smoking or just to pass the time. Although they are no longer used exclusively be men. Women don’t use them quite as much.
Judith: The Greek κομπολόγια always have an odd number of beads, a head composed of a fix bead and a barrier to separate the two threads and to help the beads flow.

Judith: Can’t you give me a better price?
Iro: Κανένα πρόβλημα
Judith: “No problem.”

Lesson focus

Judith: The focus of this lesson is the numbers 99 and above.
Iro: One hundred is εκατό. This is one of the words that get an extra N ending when the following words starts with a vowel of a plosive sound, κ, π, τ, ξ, ψ, γκ, μπ, ντ, τζ, τσ. Apart from that, we continue with our usual pattern.
Judith: One hundred one.
Iro: εκατόν ένα ...
Judith: One hundred ten.
Iro: εκατό δέκα ...
Judith: One hundred fifty-five.
Iro: εκατόν πενήντα πέντε ...
Judith: Surprisingly, the other hundreds are not called anything resembling εκατό. Instead we have the ending -κόσια, for example 200.
Iro: διακόσια
Judith: Three hundred.
Iro: τριακόσια
Judith: Four hundred.
Iro: τέτρακόσια
Judith: Five hundred.
Iro: πεντακόσια
Judith: Six hundred.
Iro: εξακόσια
Judith: Seven hundred.
Iro: επτακόσια
Judith: Eight hundred.
Iro: οκτακόσια
Judith: Nine hundred.
Iro: εννιακόσια
Judith: And a thousand?
Iro: χίλια.
Judith: For more than 1,000, the Greeks literally say, 2,000s, 3,000s, 4,000s and so on. So they actually use the plural of the word χίλια for all but the first. The plural is χιλιάδες, so we get the following, 2,000?
Iro: δύο χιλιάδες
Judith: Ten thousand.
Iro: δέκα χιλιάδες
Judith: A hundred thousand.
Iro: εκατό χιλιάδες
Judith: And how would you say 1 million?
Iro: ένα εκατομμύριο
Judith: Thank you. That just about does it for today.
