Η λέξη Ζαγόρι προέρχεται από τη σλαβική πρόταση «Za gora» που σημαίνει «πίσω από τα βουνά», και αποτελεί μετάφραση του «Παρωραία», του αρχαίου ονόματος της περιοχής. Η ιστορία της δεν είναι γεμάτη κατακτήσεις και πολεμικούς αγώνες, γιατί το έδαφος της περιοχής είναι εξαιρετικά δύσβατο, με απότομες χαράδρες, πυκνά δάση και ψηλά βουνά, και ίσως γι' αυτό έχουν παραμείνει ακόμα ζωντανά ήθη, έθιμα και παραδόσεις που η προέλευσή τους κρατά από πολύ παλιά. They are a network of traditional villages famous for their natural beauty and their unique architecture. The word Zagori derives from the Slavic sentence "Za gora," which means "behind the mountains," and it is a translation of the "Parorea," the ancient name of the region. Its history is not full of conquests and wars, since the area's terrain is extremely unreachable with bluffs, gulches, dense forests, and high mountains. This is probably why customs, morals, and traditions whose origins were long ago have still remained alive. Zagori's villages, with Papigo and Monodendri among the most famous, are characterized by their unique architecture that uses as basic materials the local stone and wood and have as their primary aim the confrontation of the unfavorable weather conditions of the area. Τα νησιά αυτά, παρά τη μοναδικότητα και ξεχωριστή ιδιαιτερότητα που τα χαρακτηρίζει, εμφανίζουν μεταξύ τους και πολλές ομοιότητες ως προς το τοπίο, το κλίμα και την αρχιτεκτονική. Το αιγαιοπελαγίτικο τοπίο είναι βραχώδες και σχεδόν χωρίς καθόλου πράσινο, εξαιτίας του ξηρού και με λιγοστές βροχές κλίματος, με τους αέρηδες της περιοχής να φυσούν δυνατά στα στενά σοκάκια. Το άγονο έδαφος, καλυμμένο με μικρούς θάμνους, σε πολλά σημεία μοιάζει έρημο, αφού η ανθρώπινη εκμετάλλευση δεν το έχει αγγίξει ακόμα. Το ίδιο ισχύει και για πολλές παραλίες με καταγάλανα νερά και μαλακή άμμο ή στρογγυλές πέτρες. Στα νησιά αυτά κυριαρχούν οι αντιθέσεις των χρωμάτων κάτω από τον εκτυφλωτικό ήλιο· τα γήινα χρώματα του τοπίου περιβάλλονται από το μπλε του ουρανού και της θάλασσας, ενώ ανάμεσά τους πινελιές άσπρες έρχονται να ολοκληρώσουν την εικόνα. Οι πινελιές αυτές δεν είναι άλλες παρά τα παραδοσιακά σπίτια, με τους άσπρους ασβεστωμένους τοίχους και τα μπλε παραθυρόφυλλα, σήμα κατατεθέν των Κυκλάδων. Στους δαιδαλώδεις σχηματισμούς των οικισμών κυριαρχεί η γραφικότητα και ο ρομαντισμός, με τις ροζ βουκαμβίλιες να σκαρφαλώνουν στους άσπρους τοίχους και τις μικρές εκκλησίες να υψώνουν τους τρούλους τους στις πλατείες. Πρωτεύουσά του είναι η πόλη του Ηρακλείου, ενώ άλλες σημαντικές είναι τα Χανιά και το Ρέθυμνο. Πολλοί θεωρούν πως πρωτοκατοικήθηκε κατά την Παλαιολιθική εποχή, στοιχεία όμως υπάρχουν από την Νεολιθική. Σημαντικότερος σταθμός στην ιστορία του νησιού είναι ο Μινωικός πολιτισμός (3000-1400 πΧ), όπου εξαιτίας της μεγάλης οικονομικής ανάπτυξης υπήρξε σημαντική πρόοδος και έτσι μέχρι σήμερα έχουν ανακαλυφθεί πολλά αρχαιολογικά ευρήματα, όπως τα παλάτια της Κνωσού και της Φαιστού. Όσον αφορά στη νεότερη ιστορία του νησιού, το 1291 η Κρήτη πέφτει στα χέρια των Ενετών και το 1645 στων Οθωμανών. Μετά από πολλούς αγώνες, το 1897 ανεξαρτητοποιείται και το 1912 γίνεται μέρος του νεοσύστατου Ελληνικού κράτους. Η τοπογραφία του νησιού παρουσιάζει μεγάλη ποικιλία: από ορεινά τοπία με απόκρημνες κορυφές και πεδιάδες, έως παραλίες με κρυστάλλινα νερά και ενδοχώρα. Το τοπίο το χαρακτηρίζουν ελιές και αμπέλια, που διαδέχονται σε εικόνες και χρώματα το ένα το άλλο. Έτσι, εξαιτίας αυτής της ποικιλίας σε τοπία και κλίμα, έχει μεγάλη παραγωγή και εξαγωγή σε αγροτικά προϊόντα. Its capital is the city of Iraklion, while other important cities are Chania and Rethimno. Many believe that it was first inhabited during the Paleolithic era; however, evidence exists only since the Neolithic. The most important point in the island's history is the Minoan civilization (3000–1400 BC), when, because of the great economical development, the evolution that occurred was significant. So through modern times, many archeological findings have been discovered, such as the palaces of Knossos and Festus. Concerning the contemporary history of the island, in 1291 Crete was occupied by Venetians and in 1645 by Ottomans. After several fights, in 1897 it became independent and in 1912 it became a member of the newly composed Greek state. The topography of the island presents great variety, from mountainous landscapes with precipitous peaks and valleys to beaches with crystal waters and mainland. The landscape is characterized by olive trees and vineyards, which succeed one another in images and colors. Thus, because of this variety in landscapes and climate, the island\'s agricultural production and export is on a large scale. The Cretan diet is considered to offer health and longevity: its base consists of fruits, legumes, vegetables, dry nuts, honey, and olive oil, whereas fish and meat are to follow. Known dishes are dakos, hohlii, gamopilafo, kalitsunia, and mizithra pies. Cretans are people proud of their origin and land, with manners that honor their traditions and respect family. If a traditional Cretan was to be described, he would be dark haired with moustache, black clothes, and a scarf on the head. Characteristic of the Cretan society are the vendettas. The vengefulness between different families can last for years, passing from one generation to another. Κατά τη διάρκεια αυτής της περιόδου η Αθήνα υπέστη πολλές καταστροφές και σε μνημεία μεγάλης αρχαιολογικής σημασίας. The monuments and houses of Neoclasical character, apartment flats of the modern movement, and contemporary buildings, shape the contemporary image of the city. Plazas and small parks are filled with people and have become the centers of each neighborhood. In them, the life of the Athenians' day and night takes place, with shops, taverns, and bars along the streets to compose the nighttime landscape.
